President Barack Obama made a fervent plea for Hillary Clinton on Wednesday, casting the Democratic nominee as a custodian of his legacy while rejecting Republicans' message as fostering anger and hate.
In remarks that demonstrated Obama's lasting appeal to wide swaths of the Democratic Party, the President sought to describe country headed firmly in the right direction, despite the loud protestations otherwise by Donald Trump.

Obama told the crowd at the Wells Fargo Center that he is "more optimistic about the future of America than ever before." Obama said his former secretary of state is a better qualified candidate than even he or her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had been when they sought office.
"I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman -- not me, not Bill, nobody -- more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America," Obama said to a roaring crowd -- and a belly-laughing Bill Clinton -- at the Democratic National Convention.

Even as a pessimistic attitude pervades the presidential campaign, Obama attempted to harness the optimism that propelled him into office eight years ago.
"America is already great," Obama insisted, rejecting Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again." "America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump."
In remarks that defended his own record as a progressive leader as much as they boosted the candidate who could maintain them, Obama argued that two terms of a Democrat weren't enough to finish the work he started.
"I have confidence, as I leave this stage tonight, that the Democratic Party is in good hands," Obama said to scattered sighs among the delegates. "My time in this office hasn't fixed everything; as much as we've done, there's still so much I want to do."
Ahead of Obama's speech, aides said the President was intent on highlighting the aspects of Clinton's record he feels have been overlooked through the years, including her work protecting children and her dogged work as his secretary of state.
Obama worked with White House speechwriter Cody Keenan on the address for three weeks, going through six drafts. The most recent draft came after First Lady Michelle Obama's well-received speech on Monday night, which had the President up until 3 a.m. on Tuesday re-writing, White House officials said.
Michelle Obama endorsed her husband's speech.
"That's my man! Your truth, dignity and grace reminds us what real leadership looks like. I am always proud of our @POTUS." she tweeted.

The President had debated whether he should do a point-by-point policy speech but decided to talk about themes of America given how unconventional the election has become.
He also acknowledged that many Democrats remain wary of their party's nominee.
"Hillary's got her share of critics," Obama said. "She's been caricatured by the right and by some folks on the left; accused of everything you can imagine -- and some things you can't. But she knows that's what happens when you're under a microscope for 40 years. She knows she's made mistakes, just like I have; just like we all do. That's what happens when we try."
And he offered a nod to the supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, many of whom remain bitterly disappointed in their candidate's loss to Clinton in this year's primary contests.
"This is not your typical election," Obama said during his fourth Democratic convention speech. "It's not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right. This is a more fundamental choice -- about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self-government."
Detailing Clinton's record, Obama said the former top diplomat had the best view of what it takes to occupy the Oval Office.
"Nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the Oval Office," Obama said. "You can read about it. You can study it. Until you've sat at that desk, you don't know what it's like to manage a global crisis, or send young people to war. But Hillary's been in the room; she's been part of those decisions."
Her rival, meanwhile, is merely ginning up fear to secure votes, Obama argued.
"Donald Trump calls it 'a divided crime scene' that only he can fix," Obama said of the Republican nominee's descriptions of the state of the country. "He's just offering slogans, and he's offering fear. He's betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election."
"That is another bet that Donald Trump will lose," Obama continued. "Because he's selling the American people short. We are not a fragile or frightful people. Our power doesn't come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order. We don't look to be ruled."
Obama said the message at last week's GOP convention in Cleveland "wasn't particularly Republican -- and it sure wasn't conservative."
"What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, and turn away from the rest of the world," Obama said. "There were no serious solutions to pressing problems -- just the fanning of resentment, and blame, and anger, and hate."

Buried in the emails stolen from the account of John Podesta, chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign, is a list of 84 proposed “principles/slogans." (The FreeBeacon's Lachlan Markay, who dug it up, graciously counted the total as 85 because it includes “It's your time” twice.)

The list is very Hillary-Clinton-y: exhaustive, often corny and subject to group debate. There are a few broad categories, including “Fighter,” “Future/Forward,” “Fairness/Families” and “Basic Bargain/Making America Work.” The slogans are often riffs on those categories, and they are often very bad. (Donald Trump's slogan, “Make America Great Again,” is also very Trump-y. He settled on it right after Mitt Romney lost in 2012 and then quickly trademarked it.)

As a public service, I wasted a few minutes ranking the proposals from most to least terrible. The actual choice, “Stronger Together,” ended up at 11th on my list, which really isn't that shabby. I assure you that I was not a member of the focus group that weeded through the final options. Where appropriate, I have added comments about why the slogan earned the ranking I gave it. Those are provided in italics.

    84. Rise Up. You know who says “rise up”? Robots and Chilean freedom fighters. Who does Clinton want America to rise up against? The moneyed elites in Washington? Probably not. (It has been brought to my attention that this maybe has something to do with the play “Hamilton,” so I'm glad it's in dead last.)

    83. Because your time is now. Why not just, “You will soon die; vote Clinton”?

    82. It's about time — and it's about you. There's nothing less about me than someone else running for president.

    81. Keep moving. The TSA plans to use this for when it runs for president.

    80. It's about you. See #82.

    79. A fair chance to get ahead.

    78. Secure the Future. I believe this is the tagline to a Shailene Woodley movie.

    77. Next begins with you. No, it begins with N.

    76. You've earned a fair chance.

    75. Move ahead. I like to reinforce that America is basically a 320-million-person line at a deli counter.

    74. You've earned a fair shot.

    73. Putting America to work for you.

    72. A fair fight for families.

    71. Progress for people. What about ponies?

    70. America gets strong when you get ahead. This seems like it could be subject to some awkwardness.

    69. Your family is her fight.

    68. Time for a better bargain. Head to aisle 8 to learn more.

    67. Stronger at home. And then everyone thinks, “weaker abroad.”

    66. Your family. Her fight. I'd recommend that candidates avoid the suggestion that they'd like to beat up my family.

    65. A fair chance for families.

    64. Fairness worth the fight.

    63. A stronger America for a new day. This is two slogans, Frankensteined.

    62. Your future is her fight. Fight doesn't work in these! But .?.?.

    61. Your future. Her fight .?.?. this is a better way to formulate it.

    60. Putting Fairness First.

    59. A promise you can count on.

    58. Fighting for Fairness. Fighting for you.

    57. Fairness First.

    56. American strength from American families. Another bit of advice: Try to avoid Soylent Green/Snowpiercer implications in a campaign slogan.

    55. Hillary — For Fairness. For Families. Why this one in particular mandated the inclusion of Clinton's name is a mystery lost to the ages.

    54. The ideas we need and the strength to deliver.

    53. A better bargain for a better tomorrow.

    52. A new promise for a new time.

    51. Fairness for all our families.

    50. Together we're strong. This is a good example of how slight rewordings can make an idea much better or much stupider.

48 (tie). Building a fairer future today.

48 (tie). Building a fairer future. Why are these separate? Was there a lengthy debate over whether to include “today”?

    47. It's your turn. This is what Clinton said to Barack Obama in June 2008, if I remember correctly.

    46. Go further.

    45. Our Families, Our Future.

    44. It's your time.

    43. Don't turn back. Good for Halloween.

    42. A new bargain we can count on.

    41. Strength for all our families.

    40. A fair shot and a fair deal. And a chicken in every pot and peace and prosperity and I like Ike.

    39. Your future. Your terms. This sounds like the middle of a Verizon ad.

    38. A stronger America one family at a time. Starting with .?.?. [pulls card from hat] .?.?. the Clintons! Neat!

    37. Renewing our basic bargain.

    36. Getting ahead together.

    35. Progress for the rest of us. This one is pretty close, but the “us” serves as a reminder that the Clintons are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. It evokes Clinton walking up to give her first State of the Union address and proposing a “give speeches to big businesses” jobs program.

    34. For an America that leads.

    33. Unleash opportunity. This is from a BMW ad, I think.

    32. Move up. Better than “move forward.”

From this point on, they're a bit better.

    31. A fighting chance for families.

    30. She's got your back.

    29. Progress for all.

    28. New Solutions Real Results. The lack of a comma is intriguing.

    27. Get ahead. Stay ahead.

    26. Lifting us up. Moving us forward.

    25. Strength and fairness. This one does seem as if it's from the “Hunger Games.” Though that vibe is sort of hard to avoid, I guess.

    24. A stronger America working for you.

    23. Real Fairness; Real Solutions.

    22. For your family. For America's future.

    21. Building a better tomorrow.

    20. Making America work. Together.

    19. Families first.

    18. A better bargain. For all. This would have echoed Trump in a weird way, which I like.

    17. America's strength. America's promise.

    16. Building tomorrow's America.

    15. It's about you. It's about time.

    14. Strength you can count on.

    13. An America built for you.

    12. Moving Ahead. Together.

    11. Stronger together. The winner!

    10. A future worth fighting for.

    9. A new bargain for a stronger America

    8. A force for families. Good Lucasfilm tie-in opportunity.

    7. Own the future.

    6. An America that works for you.

    5. Climb higher. This is weirdly so much better than “Move forward,” etc. Maybe because it combines effort with upward progress? It's a good example of the nuance that goes into this nonsense.

    4. Renewing America's promise.

    3. Making America work for you.

    2. A stronger tomorrow. “Tomorrow” versus “together” is probably a subjective call, but I like the future-looking version better than the “we are friends” version.

Look, you're gettin' all your friends and you're gettin' in the car
And you're comin' to the house, are we clear right now, huh?

CLINTON: Thank you. Thank you all. Thank you.
    (APPLAUSE)
Thank you all very much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much.

    (APPLAUSE)
Very rowdy group. Thank you, my friends. Thank you. Thank you, thank you so very much for being here and I love you all, too.
Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans. This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for and I'm sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.
But I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together, this vast, diverse, creative, unruly, energized campaign. You represent the best of America and being your candidate has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
    (APPLAUSE)
I know how disappointed you feel because I feel it too, and so do tens of millions of Americans who invested their hopes and dreams in this effort. This is painful and it will be for a long time, but I want you to remember this. Our campaign was never about one person or even one election, it was about the country we love and about building an America that's hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.
We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. But I still believe in America and I always will. And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.
Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power and we don't just respect that, we cherish it. It also enshrines other things; the rule of law, the principle that we are all equal in rights and dignity, freedom of worship and expression. We respect and cherish these values too and we must defend them.
    (APPLAUSE)
Now -- and let me add, our constitutional democracy demands our participation, not just every four years but all the time. So let's do all we can to keep advancing the causes and values we all hold dear; making our economy work for everyone not just those at the top, protecting our country and protecting our planet and breaking down all the barriers that hold any American back from achieving their dreams.
CLINTON: We've spent a year and a half bringing together millions of people from every corner of our country to say with one voice that we believe that the American dream is big enough for everyone -- for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people, and people with disabilities. For everyone.
    (APPLAUSE)
So now, our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part to build that better, stronger, fairer America we seek. And I know you will.
I am so grateful to stand with all of you. I want to thank Tim Kaine and Anne Holton for being our partners on this journey.
    (APPLAUSE)
It has been a joy getting to know them better, and it gives me great hope and comfort to know that Tim will remain on the front lines of our democracy representing Virginia in the Senate.
    (APPLAUSE)
To Barack and Michelle Obama, our country owes you an enormous debt of gratitude.
    (APPLAUSE)
We -- we thank you for your graceful, determined leadership that has meant so much to so many Americans and people across the world.
And to Bill and Chelsea, Mark, Charlotte, Aidan, our brothers and our entire family, my love for you means more than I can ever express. You crisscrossed this country on our behalf and lifted me up when I needed it most -- even four-month-old Aidan who traveled with his mom.
I will always be grateful to the creative, talented, dedicated men and women at our headquarters in Brooklyn and across our country.
    (APPLAUSE)
You poured your hearts into this campaign. For some of you who are veterans, it was a campaign after you had done other campaigns. Some of you, it was your first campaign. I want each of you to know that you were the best campaign anybody could have ever expected or wanted.
    (APPLAUSE)
And to the millions of volunteers, community leaders, activists and union organizers who knocked on doors, talked to neighbors, posted on Facebook, even in secret, private Facebook sites...
    (LAUGHTER)
    (APPLAUSE)
... I want everybody coming out from behind that and make sure your voices are heard going forward.
    (APPLAUSE)
To everyone who sent in contributions as small at $5 and kept us going, thank you. Thank you from all of us.
And to the young people in particular, I hope you will hear this. I have, as Tim said, spent my entire adult life fighting for what I believe in. I've had successes and I've had setbacks. Sometimes, really painful ones. Many of you are at the beginning of your professional public and political careers. You will have successes and setbacks, too.
This loss hurts, but please never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it.
    (APPLAUSE)
CLINTON: It is -- it is worth it.
    (APPLAUSE)
And so we need -- we need you to keep up these fights now and for the rest of your lives.
And to all the women, and especially the young women, who put their faith in this campaign and in me, I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.
    (APPLAUSE)
Now, I -- I know -- I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but some day someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now.
    (APPLAUSE)
And -- and to all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.
    Finally...
    (APPLAUSE)
Finally, I am so grateful for our country and for all it has given to me. I count my blessings every single day that I am an American. And I still believe as deeply as I ever have that if we stand together and work together with respect for our differences, strength in our convictions and love for this nation, our best days are still ahead of us.
    (APPLAUSE)
Because, you know -- you know, I believe we are stronger together and we will go forward together. And you should never, ever regret fighting for that. You know, scripture tells us, "Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
So my friends, let us have faith in each other, let us not grow weary, let us not lose heart, for there are more seasons to come. And there is more work to do.
I am incredibly honored and grateful to have had this chance to represent all of you in this consequential election.
May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.
    (APPLAUSE)

My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes that we’ve received over the past few weeks. But tonight it’s my turn to say thanks.

Whether we have seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people — in living rooms and in schools; at farms and on factory floors; at diners and on distant military outposts — those conversations are what have kept me honest, and kept me inspired, and kept me going. And every day, I have learned from you. You made me a better president, and you made me a better man.

So I first came to Chicago when I was in my early twenties, and I was still trying to figure out who I was; still searching for a purpose to my life. And it was a neighborhood not far from here where I began working with church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills.

It was on these streets where I witnessed the power of faith, and the quiet dignity of working people in the face of struggle and loss.

    (CROWD CHANTING “FOUR MORE YEARS”)

    I can’t do that.

Now this is where I learned that change only happens when ordinary people get involved, and they get engaged, and they come together to demand it.

After eight years as your president, I still believe that. And it’s not just my belief. It’s the beating heart of our American idea — our bold experiment in self-government.

It’s the conviction that we are all created equal, endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It’s the insistence that these rights, while self-evident, have never been self-executing; that We, the People, through the instrument of our democracy, can form a more perfect union.

What a radical idea, the great gift that our Founders gave to us. The freedom to chase our individual dreams through our sweat, and toil, and imagination — and the imperative to strive together as well, to achieve a common good, a greater good.

For 240 years, our nation’s call to citizenship has given work and purpose to each new generation. It’s what led patriots to choose republic over tyranny, pioneers to trek west, slaves to brave that makeshift railroad to freedom.

It’s what pulled immigrants and refugees across oceans and the Rio Grande. It’s what pushed women to reach for the ballot. It’s what powered workers to organize. It’s why GIs gave their lives at Omaha Beach and Iwo Jima; Iraq and Afghanistan — and why men and women from Selma to Stonewall were prepared to give theirs as well.

    (APPLAUSE)

So that’s what we mean when we say America is exceptional. Not that our nation has been flawless from the start, but that we have shown the capacity to change, and make life better for those who follow.

Yes, our progress has been uneven. The work of democracy has always been hard. It has been contentious. Sometimes it has been bloody. For every two steps forward, it often feels we take one step back. But the long sweep of America has been defined by forward motion, a constant widening of our founding creed to embrace all, and not just some.

    (APPLAUSE)

If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry, and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history — if I had told you that we would open up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot, take out the mastermind of 9-11 — if I had told you that we would win marriage equality and secure the right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens — if I had told you all that, you might have said our sights were set a little too high.

But that’s what we did. That’s what you did. You were the change. The answer to people’s hopes and, because of you, by almost every measure, America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started.

In 10 days the world will witness a hallmark of our democracy. No, no, no, no, no. The peaceful transfer of power from one freely-elected President to the next. I committed to President-Elect Trump that my administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as President Bush did for me.

Because it’s up to all of us to make sure our government can help us meet the many challenges we still face. We have what we need to do so. We have everything we need to meet those challenges. After all, we remain the wealthiest, most powerful, and most respected nation on earth.

Our youth, our drive, our diversity and openness, our boundless capacity for risk and reinvention means that the future should be ours. But that potential will only be realized if our democracy works. Only if our politics better reflects the decency of our people. Only if all of us, regardless of party affiliation or particular interests help restore the sense of common purpose that we so badly need right now.

And that’s what I want to focus on tonight, the state of our democracy. Understand democracy does not require uniformity. Our founders argued, they quarreled, and eventually they compromised. They expected us to do the same. But they knew that democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity. The idea that, for all our outward differences, we’re all in this together, that we rise or fall as one.

There have been moments throughout our history that threatened that solidarity. And the beginning of this century has been one of those times. A shrinking world, growing inequality, demographic change, and the specter of terrorism. These forces haven’t just tested our security and our prosperity, but are testing our democracy as well. And how we meet these challenges to our democracy will determine our ability to educate our kids and create good jobs and protect our homeland.

In other words, it will determine our future. To begin with, our democracy won’t work without a sense that everyone has economic opportunity.

    (APPLAUSE)

And the good news is that today the economy is growing again. Wages, incomes, home values and retirement accounts are all rising again. Poverty is falling again.

    (APPLAUSE)

The wealthy are paying a fair share of taxes. Even as the stock market shatters records, the unemployment rate is near a 10-year low. The uninsured rate has never, ever been lower.

    (APPLAUSE)

Health care costs are rising at the slowest rate in 50 years. And I’ve said, and I mean it, anyone can put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we’ve made to our health care system, that covers as many people at less cost, I will publicly support it.

    (APPLAUSE)

Because that, after all, is why we serve. Not to score points or take credit. But to make people’s lives better.

    (APPLAUSE)

But, for all the real progress that we’ve made, we know it’s not enough. Our economy doesn’t work as well or grow as fast when a few prosper at the expense of a growing middle class, and ladders for folks who want to get into the middle class.

    (APPLAUSE)

That’s the economic argument. But stark inequality is also corrosive to our democratic idea. While the top 1 percent has amassed a bigger share of wealth and income, too many of our families in inner cities and in rural counties have been left behind.

The laid off factory worker, the waitress or health care worker who’s just barely getting by and struggling to pay the bills. Convinced that the game is fixed against them. That their government only serves the interest of the powerful. That’s a recipe for more cynicism and polarization in our politics.

Now there’re no quick fixes to this long-term trend. I agree, our trade should be fair and not just free. But the next wave of economic dislocations won’t come from overseas. It will come from the relentless pace of automation that makes a lot of good middle class jobs obsolete.

And so we’re going to have to forge a new social compact to guarantee all our kids the education they need.

    (APPLAUSE)

    To give workers the power…

    (APPLAUSE)

… to unionize for better wages.

    (CHEERS)

To update the social safety net to reflect the way we live now.

    (APPLAUSE)

And make more reforms to the tax code so corporations and the individuals who reap the most from this new economy don’t avoid their obligations to the country that’s made their very success possible.

    (CHEERS)

    (APPLAUSE)

We can argue about how to best achieve these goals. But we can’t be complacent about the goals themselves. For if we don’t create opportunity for all people, the disaffection and division that has stalled our progress will only sharpen in years to come.

There’s a second threat to our democracy. And this one is as old as our nation itself.

After my election there was talk of a post-racial America. And such a vision, however well intended, was never realistic. Race remains a potent…

    (APPLAUSE)

… and often divisive force in our society.

If my wife and I can not get a table at MaMa Zu and 7 eleven is out of gonorrhea taquitos, we usually give up and go to Pomegranate. We love the tossed salad.

  • *****

Somebody linked me to this site and said there was a porno with Kevin, Jason, and Sarah M. This is just that Kevin's site.

  • *****

The best tossed salad in the rva area. the chef comes to your table and gently tosses each salad until the customer is satisfied. absolutely exquisite.

  • *****

So, I have to admit first that we only stopped by for appetizers and a cocktail, but I was so impressed I just had to stop by here and toot the pomegranate horn! Woop woop! We ordered the charcuterie board and a mushroom torte of some kind. Our service and enthusiastic welcome was refreshing and the food was amazing! It looked every bit as good as it tasted, art on the palate! I toured the interior and loved every table and view, but we chose to sit on the small patio in front on Cary st. Often times, this means less than perfect service when patrons are out of site, but this wasn't the case here. I can't wait to go back for dinner. The pomegranate seeds on the pt' just blew me away!

  • *****

What a great addition to the Richmond restaurant scene & to Carytown! We had a terrific meal last night - 2 couples, everybody happy, all plates devoured. The pumpkin soup is outstanding. We also had rabbit pate, olives, arugula salad, ravioli, branzini, mussels - a little bit of everything & it was all delicious. Bread pudding, berries with lemon curd and pot de creme for dessert - also topnotch. The service was excellent, in spite of unusual crowds because of graduation festivities. The outdoor patio was perfect. We'll be back.

Recently celebrated girlfriends bday at Pomegranate with a large group!!! It was difficult to find a location to host 12 on a Saturday! Pomegranate came through and were more than accommodating. We had never experienced the full dinner menu, generally happy hour or brunch. Not a single drink or bite was disappointing to the group! The calamari and pate appetizers were phenomenal! Main courses were lamb, skirt steak, monkfish and pork cheeks! No plate had any evidence of food!! A great night had by all and we will be returning soon!!!

  • *****

It's not often an establishment has a Chef who believes in his food and is willing to share his passion and creativity with others. Guaranteed to keep you returning for more!

  • *****

If we're looking for a place with consistently great food and service, without being too stuffy, pomegranate is where we go! Prices are fair for the food quality, and portion size is appropriate. Bar service is creative and tasty. Our long standing food faves are the rabbit pate and ravioli with butter sauce for appies, and then whatever seasonal pork product chef Kevin has put together for an entree. The shrimp dish from last year was also a go to and I'm hoping it makes it back on the menu (ahem, ahem). The pumpkin soup is so good we ordered some for thanksgiving at home. Some of our favorite wait staff in Richmond, too!

  • *****

We started with fried goat cheese stuffed artichokes which were part of happy hour specials. They were moist and delicious. The beer specials were good. I had Harden saison which was very flavorful. We split the flat iron steak and the salmon. Neither disappointed. the steak had a delicate smoky flavor and was served with tender asparagus and crispy hash browns which were perfect. The salmon was cooked to perfection and served with greens and cou cous. All in all, this was a wonderful dining experience

  • *****

Granted, it is not going to be cheap, but it will be delicious. One of the few places in Richmond I think is worth the cost. The house made ricotta with honey is to die for. Really, you can't go wrong here. Yum!

  • *****

Beautiful restaurant with a serious chef who obviously put some thoughts and creativity in his menu! My friend had a pomegranate-themed martini that looked delicious. I had the ravioli as appetizer, Bronzino as entree and a goat milk pudding to round off the night, all were elegantly executed. Service was non-intrusive yet very friendly and attentive. Price might seem a little high compared to average Richmond establishment but the quality of food makes it well worth it. You would definitely pay more for a meal like this in bigger cities. I can't wait to come back for more!

  • *****

Wonderful service and atmosphere. We stopped in for drinks during happy hour and the staff as a courtesy brought us a dessert "mistake" from the kitchen that was delicious - just like the drinks.

  • *****

Very quant and enjoyable atmosphere. The dish I had was the Tagliolini pasta with vegetables, and it was very good. This location is great for date nights and friends up to 4 people.

From my blog Grit & Glitter ( gritandglitter.blogspot. ) about their brunch only:

You best believe I ordered what I came there for: the Dixie Donut Burger. A delicious beef patty, nestled between two Dixie Donut glazed donuts, and topped with fontina cheese and bacon jam (which is somehow MORE delicious than it sounds). The burger was cooked perfectly, the flavors complemented each other in the best way, and even though the bottom donut soaks up all the burger grease (I went mid rare so there was a lot of that) rendering it useless, I didn't care! It just added to the experience...and reminded me of what I was putting into my body and that I should plan a gym visit for later. It comes with a side of pomme frites, but you may not need them.
My friend made another excellent choice and got the Biscuits and Gravy. These are housemade duck fat biscuits generously covered in a duck confit gravy. I tried a little taste (since I had my feat to overcome) and instantly knew that the next time I went in, that's what I was getting. I'd already had their biscuits at dinner and knew how tasty and moist (sorry if you hate that word!) they were, but that gravy...whew. I don't have duck often, so I didn't know what to expect, but the flavor was phenomenal.
Add $6 mimosas and $7 smoked tomato bloodys with bacon dust and we were all set. Anyone would be set with that! Amiright?
Def check them out for brunch or dinner!

This is such a hard one to write. I planned a dinner for 20 and spoke directly to the owner/chef Kevin about it. He was so difficult to communicate with and I thought he'd be happy with a group of 20 but instead it almost seemed like an inconvenience. I could never figure out why.
However, the food here was excellent! Every dish was truly delicious. Rabbit pate, ricotta, charcuterie, and all salads got rave reviews. I had the bone marrow, always a treat for me and rarely offered, it was beyond good. For entrees, we have to completely reinforce other reviewers that the donut burger was out of control. Chicken, pasta and salmon also were reportedly delicious! We chose a red and white for the group and both the Routestack Cab and the Cambria Chardonnay were delicious, perfect temperature and very fairly priced.
I would have given Kevin a 5 for sure based on food and ambience alone. But our waitress was surly enough and The fact that Kevin didn't come out to say hello justifies a drop to 4 stars.
I would love to return here with a smaller group as the food was very special and very fairly priced but would hope that I find more friendly faces to serve us.

This place was incredible! Literally everything we got was delicious, drinks included. Definitely try the ravioli app, lamb entree, and musels and frites!!

Our staff of 16 recently got together to celebrate an event. We chose Pomegranate for a number of reasons - one of which there is a cozy private environment where we were basically able to take over the entire downstairs section and bar area. In addition, Chef and owner Kevin LaCivita was VERY accommodating to all of our specialty foody needs of our staff, including those who were vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten free, etc. We were not only welcomed, with all our special food requests, but made to feel really special and the service was above and beyond. Everyone was pleased and we had a memorable time. Nice menu. I have been a fan of Pomegranate since they were located in Shokoe Slip. Very pleased to see that they are offering their excellent menu to the Richmond scene. This is a restaurant worth adding to your short list. Thanks again to Chef Kevin and his crew.

This place was awesome, but a tad expensive for the value by my book. I loved the decor and ambiance, though it is a bit small so if you have more than two or three you might want to make a reservation to be sure! The server was great for the most part -- he got a little bogged down but we had a party of seven with completely separate checks and multiple split items so it was very understandable.

Among the seven of us, we had a variety of cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Everyone loved their food -- they'd just switched to their spring menu and it was not huge but had variety to please everyone. I tried the Blushing Bella cocktail, split the charcuterie plate app, had the fresh pasta with homemade local tomato sauce and excellent romano cheese for my entree, and devoured the goat cheese pudding for dessert (it wasn't REALLY solid/pudding like, but it was still good).

My only beef with this place was the prices. Though I had a great experience and very good food, I felt everything was just a tad overpriced, and that feeling was exacerbated by our large orders and the number of people at the table. I'm more likely to come back for drinks and dessert or appetizers than a full meal again, but overall I liked it!

Everything here is absolutely delicious. I have been here for drinks, appetizers, brunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The menu is adventurous for some but you will not be disappointed. Do yourself a favor and try the rabbit pate when you sit down and you will be amazed at how much you love it. The little pomegranate seeds that surround the plate add a pop of color and a fresh splash of fruit to the dish. Yum! For brunch I had the exquisite duck fat biscuits surrounded by their homemade gravy.

Also, if you're a pork belly fan, there is something in store for you! Eggs stop a perfectly cooked melt in your mouth slab of pork belly on top of French toast croquettes. OMG!

Seriously...the drinks the food the staff...great great place!

Great little place in Carytown!. Small space but lots of it! Tables outside, in the front window, upstairs seating is nice near the front windows, but looks great in the kitchen. Fresh, hot bread and butter is a nice touch. Good variety on the menu. I had the taglioni pasta and it was good. Not very filling but very fresh. The salads looked amazing and colorful. Give it a try!

    really good

the waitstaff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The food is great, and portions are a perfect size. The local tomato salad was great, burrata creamy and delicious, pickled watermelon rind and watermelon balls were on point. Sprinkled with some sea salt this dish was really well put together.

The pesto pasta was also really good. Very light and refreshing, served with jumbo shrimp and pretty much a whole squid, garnished with touches of lemon peel and topped with pickled onions. Loved it, although the squid wasn't very flavorful.

Anyway I'll be back to try more dishes and dessert next time

Delish!!! can't wait to go back. It transported me to Europe - I couldn't decide if it was Belgium, The Black Forest in Germany, or France - but who cares...

The service was excellent and the food just perfect... We had a table upstairs, and watched the magic happen from that tiny kitchen :-)

Charcuterie.... with the rabbit pate - we savored every bite!

Oh this love affair Pomengranite...how'd you turned a burger into such deliciousness. Sugar shack donuts drizzled with syrup with a perfect patty, candied bacon and cheese. There's lettuce and tomatoes too but come on, you don't order the burger here for that.

  • *****

Good happy hour and cute patio and dog friendly. The donut burger is unique and iresistable.

Friday night dinner with friends! Sat in the window overlooking the patio so it felt like we were eating outside!! Enjoyed the oyster appetizer but not a huge fan of the risotto balls. My husband loved his seafood paella and it had a wonderful spicy flavor! My friend's salmon was juicy and served with grits and broccolini - very generous portion! The special was seared scallops in a spicy marinara with tagliatelle. It was flavorful but the few scallops in the dish were small and not really seared. I enjoyed it but it wasn't as good as the other two entrees. Friendly service. Frequent refills of water and we kept the wine flowing too! Cute, cozy spot! I'll definitely come back - not sure why it wasn't busier. We still need to use our Groupon which we didn't realize was valid only Tuesday - Thursday. Always read the fine print! Oh well, we look forward to going back!!

Came here for Sunday brunch. I got the French toast funnel cake and my boyfriend got the donut burger. Everyone was very nice and the renovations gave the place a very nice facelift! They even have a dog menu, which I took advantage of. The chef gave us a complimentary side of his mashed potatoes cake because we had asked about it earlier but decided not to get it. Our server said that he wanted us to try it because it's delicious and it was! My dish was great! The sausage definitely helped balance out the sugar sweet funnel cake French toast. My boyfriend said his donut burger was very good, although he couldn't pick it up to eat it because of its sheer size.

We have been going to Pomegranate since it reopened in Carytown. Without exception our experiences have been great. The food is delicious -- eclectic if you want it, but always something on the menu for everyone. I've noticed Yelp reviews about disappearing staff and long wait times, but we have never experienced either. The staff has always been attentive and fun, and I have never considered our wait time for food to be unreasonable. This is one of our consistent recommendations for folks seeking a restaurant in Richmond, and we continue to be regulars. You can't go wrong here!

Pomegranate is one of our favorite go-to restaurants. We go there at least once a month. The food is fabulous and the seasonal menu changes always keep it fresh! I've had some dishes there that rival what I've experienced in Europe. We love the staff - they are attentive and personable. One of my favorite things is they have a pet friendly patio! We love to bring our dog with us. She loves it too - she gets showered with attention and we can order food prepared especially for her! What a gem to have in Carytown!! We recommend Pomegranate to everyone we know!

I was fortunate enough to dine here this past week. The staff was extremely attentive and the food was beyond delicious! Deviled eggs topped with braised pork belly, stuffed artichoke hearts and the donut burger... oh my! So much goodness in one little spot!!!

Pomegranate is one of my favorite dining spots in Richmond. I have never had a bad dish- food is so good that I don't even order for myself anymore I left the chef decide. The salmon is a top favorite of mine! Don't forget to try the desserts too! Love Pomegranate!!

Had an amazing experience with the waitress Lauren. I've never been to this restaurant before, and I'm pretty lucky the past few I've been to were incredible.
I went in on a whim and had a glass of Cabernet and then decided to order the fried artichokes. Let me tell you that it was probably the most appetizing little meal I've had in such a long time. The atmosphere downstairs is quite homey. They have an upstairs that also seats people.
I can't wait to try the dinner here next time I come to visit, and also update this review ;)

Delightful Sunday brunch with family in a bright sunny space.
We were seated at the front windows.
An eclectic menu, with delicate touches.
Would love to come back when the weather is a little warmer and we can sit outside and watch folks come down Cary St.
Just note, doors don't open 'till 11AM.

Those of you who have not dined at Pomegranate have been missing a real treat. The atmosphere is always pleasing whether one is downstairs, upstairs or on the front patio. Service is always with a smile and the food is prepared to perfection. I have found the red wine selections are killer, not a huge pour but that just means a second glass is in order. Can't ask for a better place to dine. Happy they moved from Shockoe Slip to Carytown...seems to be working for them as well. There is only ONE thing that could be changed for the "baby boomers" with poor close vision and that would be the font size on the menu which is approximately an 8. This small print makes it very difficult with the perfect low lighting for one to read the menu. Be prepared with your high speed readers or a magnifying glass to see it well. Other than that, no complaints!! Go and enjoy!! You won't be disappointed!!

Pomengranite is like that "love" that friendzoned but you keep on coming back trying to get some.

I am updating the review but only bc the service got better since last time I went. Well it wasn't a busy night but the food and drinks didn't take long and I finally tried their donuts burger which is amazing. I wish there was an option for cheddar cheese. Regardless they improved the service and the food is still as good as it was before.

Incredible 3 course meal for Valentines Day. Duck confit was perfection and the veal osso bucco on a bed of spaetzle was so good. Desserts were spot on as well! Go here.

Cozy restaurant. Amazing menu and affordable too. Delicious wine and desserts. Went with a large group. Everyone loved their dishes. Owner/chef Kevin and his sous chef are the best in town. Bartender is an awesome mixologist. Ginger marg and bourbon smash on the featured list. Wine selections outstanding and not overpriced. Will definitely return. Can't wait for brunch.

Love everything about this cosy delicious place. Great menu.... We had the foie gras and I've never had better.... Succulent and rich with blackberries!! Wonderful. Then quail with a beautiful mushroom ragout ( appetizer I ate for main). We had the paella too.... Juicy and chock full of chorizo and shrimp. Cant wait to to go back!

Amazing food, atmosphere, and service. The happy hour specials are the best in Carytown.

Spectacular brunch. Chef pays extreme attention to detail. Smoked trout plate looked and tasted amazing.

Great experience at Pomegranate. Incredible strawberry basil soup, house made ricotta and amazing desserts. The chocolate soup is amazing! Service was good as well. Warm bread and butter sea salt is outstanding. One of the best meals I've had in Richmond.

What a great atmosphere and right in the middle of Cary town. Great outdoor patio! The pumpkin soup is amazing. I'll be back for sure!

What an amazing hidden jewel! Intimate setting. Fabulous, attentive service. The bourbon pomegranate cocktail was a great mix of favors. They have a whole sheet of signature pomegranate cocktails. It was hard to decide. We had the pumpkin soup and salad which were so good we had to eat half and pass so neither of us would feel bad. I had the paella which was as good as I ate in Spain. My husband had the famous donut burger and was delighted. We will definitely go back. Thanks for a wonderful date night.

Came here with a group of friends last night and was not disappointed.

Personally, I ordered the Italian Sausage with spaetzle and spinach and whole grain mustard and it was perfect. Ate the entire thing. The sausage was perfectly flavored and was complemented by the whole grain mustard. The spaetzle was lightly fried in butter, making it lightly crispy and went well with the spinach.

All 7 of us ordered different entrees and I can't remember a single complaint from anyone. Our waiter was good enough, but forgot a glass of wine at one point. He did cater to a few substitution requests which was great. A variety of appetizers and desserts were ordered by the table and again, I can't remember any complains. The charcuterie plate looked delicious, and I had a chance to try another appetizer--sort of like a fried risotto ball. Really excellent--reminded me of a really high class hush puppy.

I bought a Groupon to Pomegranate a couple of months ago and am now getting to writing a review. The restaurant is located in Carytown and the outdoor area looks very inviting.

My boyfriend and I had a very pleasing experience with both the service and the food. The waiter was helpful in helping us choose what to order. He was also very attentive as he came by our table multiple times to check on us.

I ordered the donut burger which was phenomenal. I was a little hesitant about the combination of meat and burger but it was perfect. The meat was cooked exactly how I wanted it. My boyfriend ordered the house smoked flanked steak which I got to try. The steak, too, was delicious.

If I were to pick top 5 restaurants that I've been to with my boyfriend, Pomegranate would definitely be one of them. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others, especially to try the amazing donut burger. Thanks Pomegranate!

Talk about a great experience all around! I don't think I have had service this good, from every single employee with whom I interacted, in quite a while. Everyone seemed genuine, friendly, and welcoming... definitely a sign of a happy work environment.

My husband and I met another couple at Pomegranate for dinner and drinks a few weeks back and from the moment we arrived, we were fans. I'd been dying to check out this new-ish spot in Carytown, so I was pumped to finally venture in the doors. We were there slightly early, so we grabbed drinks at the bar and relaxed on the sofa while waiting for our friends to arrive. The restaurant isn't a huge space, but they've done a great job with the layout - accommodating both a nice sized bar and a solid number of tables while still maintaining a comfortable chic atmosphere. Plus, there's patio seating when the weather allows!

Once our dining companions arrived, we headed to our table, which was one of two located in the very front of the restaurant. Prime views of the passing Carytown crowd? Love it! We started with the cheese and charcuterie plate; the perfect shared app. I was impressed with the cheese selection, and the pickled veggies were a welcome bonus. For my meal, I opted for the handmade trofie with pesto and cannelini beans. Rarely do I clean my plate, but I was thisclose to being a member of the clean plate club with this dish. The pesto was divine, and the pasta provided just the heartiness I was craving on this particular evening. One of my friends ordered the branzino (served whole) and after hearing her rave reviews I do believe I will be trying this on a future visit.

From beginning to end, this was a wonderful experience. Big props to the hostesses, bartender, and our server, who really made the experience one to remember. We'll definitely be back and look forward to exploring more of the menu.

friendly staff, helped me navigate their meat-heavy menu to find the veg options. the chef even came out to ask me about my dietary restrictions to ensure that everything was made okay! not necessary, but very kind and thoughtful. everything was delicious, cocktails were great, price was stellar for the quality.

Listen, how many places have a THREE HOUR happy hour that includes their beautiful shaded patio? Not too many places. I love Pomegrante for this reason and my girlfriends and I have definitely taken advantage of this nice set-up.

Honestly, I've been for fantastic meals at their "long table" on the lower level with family and friends from out of town. This is a go-to spot to take them. We've always loved the wines, the cozy atmosphere and entrees - seafood and their beef selections in particular.

Recently with the weather being so nice, my husband and I love coming early in the evening to split a donut burger (sounds so odd but also - delicious!) some pomme frites, short ribs, fried artichokes, their DELICIOUS ricotta (I could go on!) and sip wine on the patio. We think this is such a hidden gem with a charming interior and beautiful windows looking out onto Cary Street.

  • *****

I enjoyed the donut burger and if I had not, my dining companion would have scarfed it up. His hangar steak was also excellent, but the donut burger was a solid 10! The cherry bread pudding was a bit on the dry side. Service was excellent.

I rarely give 5 stars but since this in among the top meals I've had in Richmond, I felt comfortable in giving it for our experience.
The atmosphere is pure Richmond. Small, upscale, large front windows so you can check out the scene outside and even a small patio for when the weather is just right. We were greeted promptly and seated at one of the two prized window tables. The wine list is not large but has nice dimension. We decided on a French Burgundy (which was also available by the glass) that was just right.
This night, we skipped the small plates, though there were many that I hope to try in the future and went straight to the entrees. I chose the Tile fish with green beans, argula and marinated onions which were sauteed together and wonderfully spiced. My husband, selected the smoked hanger steak. Cooked to order over a crispy potato round with asparagus the smokiness added that perfect something that you don't often find in this familiar bisto favorite.
Service was attentive and friendly with out being intrusive and it seemed that the staff worked together well as a team to cover for one another when needed.
Overall, we had a great experience and I look forward to future visits.

We came in because we saw the happy hour sign. They had $2 off wine glasses, and amazing options for specials on appetizers. We shared the fried stuffed goat cheese artichokes, the donut burger and the frites. There is absolutely nothing bad we could say! The appetizer was unlike anything we have ever had. The burger was perfectly cooked, juicy and the perfect merriment of sweet, salty and savory. Highly recommend this place! Shelia and Erik were phenomenal!!!!

It's easy to miss Pomegranate if you're not looking for it. It's a small restaurant that sits in the shadow of C street. Nevertheless, it's a restaurant you should definitely try!

I am in love with the donut burger. Sounds like a heart attack, I know I know...but is it worth knocking a couple of years off? YES IT IS.

I wouldn't recommend picking up this burger with your hands because of the stickiness but dig in quickly with a knife and fork. The balance between the sweet donut and the savory patty is unmatched. It's a combination I'm convinced everyone will love after their first try.

I've also tried the steak and eggs. Both are good and cooked perfectly. My boyfriend and I added the ricotta pancakes because we were extra hungry that morning. Those were ok.

Sadly, I had to give 4 stars due to the small portion sizes. I've never left Pomegranate full. I left happy...but again never full. I'll still be back for that burger though!

I received a Groupon to Pomegranate for my birthday, and finally found a friend to go with when my friend from college visited me in Richmond today. It was a perfect place for dinner since we were wandering Carytown beforehand.

We had to have an early dinner since her bus back to Norfolk was at 6:45PM, so we walked in to Pomegranate at 5PM. Since it was so early, we were the only patrons. A few more diners came in during the course of our meal.

The interior is on the smaller size, but pleasant, and there are stairs leading up to a second floor (did not venture up there, so not sure if they have more seating or something up there). Decor is very simple, but clean. Our waitress was very pleasant and smiley, and tended to us attentively throughout the whole meal.

Everyone is served a complimentary bottle of chilled tap water, which they refill as needed. You can refill your water glass yourself since the bottle is left on the table, or on occasion the waitress refilled for us.

I ordered the chilled strawberry/basil soup and for my entree mussels and frites. My friend ordered the donut burger. We also ordered the charcuterie board as an appetizer.

The soup was light and reminded me of a strawberry smoothie. The charcuterie board came with several meats and cheeses, as well as some pickled vegetables. I could have sworn that the menu description also mentioned some pate, but I didn't see any on our platter. We also got four pieces of bruschetta.

My friend was amused by her donut burger, but the sweetness of the glazed donut ultimately was sweeter than she likes her burgers to be. I enjoyed my mussels, and there was a generous helping of mussels, but the fries were a little too salty for me. The mussels were also small, so it took a good amount of work/time to eat my dish, but I was given a container for the shells and I didn't really mind.

Presentation of everything from appetizer to main course was thoughtful and well-composed; there was definitely some thought/effort in the process. In addition, prices were lower than I expected, so given the quality this restaurant is actually a pretty good value.

Overall, a solid dining establishment with friendly employees.

Date night with the boyfriend last week was at Pomegranate. We arrived during happy hour (lasts until 7:30 PM!) and were seated on the patio along Cary Street. The patio allows for great people watching. The interior of Pomegranate is super cute too, with a bit of a Restoration Hardware vibe.

Happy Hour includes $3 rail drinks and $2 off beer and wine. Off of the happy hour menu, we ordered the deep fried goat cheese artichokes (2 for $3), the mussles ($7), and the donut burger ($5) to split. I loved each of these, and the serving of mussels was very large for ($7). I was a little apprehensive about the donut burger, but sans tomato, the flavors melded beautifully. I highly recommend checking out Pomegranate for its happy hour!

We then moved on to the meals. They had rolled out a new menu last week, so the menu on the website is not accurate. I had the frisee salad ($8) and the pork belly ($11) with a white bean cassoulet. The pork belly was fine, but I've had better. I wasn't really a fan of the salad at all and wouldn't order that again. Boyfriend had the half chicken confit ($24) and said it was also okay. Nothing blew us out of the water that I'd be dying to return for, but I'd certainly come back to give some of the other menu offerings a shot.

Service was there when we needed it and food arrived quickly. I wouldn't rave about the dinner options, but I also wouldn't dissuade you from checking it out. I would, however, recommend every single thing on the happy hour menu and plan on returning again soon.
